DIY: How To Unblock A Clogged Toilet

In most homes, bathrooms hardly get any attention when it comes to maintenance and in some cases, they may not be cleaned at all. This can leave the toilet blocked and we all know that clogged toilets are a terrible inconvenience. Unblocking toilets can be a relatively easy job. The key here is to have the right tools. You also need to have a good pair of rubber gloves.

How Do Toilets Get Blocked?

First of all, to get rid of all the mess, you will need to unlock the toilet. Blocking may occur due to a number of reasons – interference of foreign objects in the pipe, extensive use of toilet papers or even due to a rare fault in sewer system.

Procedure To Unblock A Blocked Toilet

If your toilet is clogged, put on your gloves and do the following before you call a plumber:

  • Try pulling the string a couple of times, or fill in the toilet completely by throwing a bucket full of water. In this way, the accumulated water will generate more pressure and can possible release the block.
  • Search for a pacifier or plunger (those wooden sticks with a piece of red rubber at the end). Try to unclog using this tool. If you fail, take a little bit of dishwasher from the kitchen and pour some into the toilet and try again.
  • Start heating half a bucket of water, and be sure to turn off the heat before the water reaches boiling point. Empty the contents into your toilet from a distance of around 70 cm from the same. Wait for a minute to let the hot water work its way through. For most cases, this should suffice.
  • If this does not work, take a coat hanger, stretch it in the form of stick and put it in the toilet and move it from the inside out. It may force the obstruction out of the way.
