Chelmsford properties — particularly the older terraced and semi-detached houses you’ll find across much of the city — can throw up some genuinely stubborn drainage problems. This was one of them. A customer contacted us with both manholes completely backed up, a system full of wipes and compacted waste, and a real worry that things were about to get a lot worse.
The problem: blocked manholes and a risk of garden flooding
When we arrived, it was clear this wasn’t a straightforward blockage. Both inspection chambers were completely full — not just slow-draining, but entirely stopped. Every time water was used inside the property, it had nowhere to go.
The customer was understandably concerned. The chambers were sitting right next to the garden, and with the system under that kind of pressure, overflow was a genuine risk. They were also worried about what the blockage might be doing to the pipework underneath.
What we found inside the chambers
Once we lifted the covers and had a proper look, the cause was obvious. Both chambers were packed with a dense mix of wet wipes, sludge, and thick scale — the sort of build-up that doesn’t happen overnight. The compaction was heavy throughout, and with access being tight, it wasn’t a case of simply jetting and walking away. The blockage needed breaking down first before any water could get through.
How we cleared it
We started by working through the debris by hand — breaking apart the wipe and sludge build-up, clearing out both chambers, and getting the system to a point where jetting was actually going to be effective.
Jetting and descaling to restore full flow
Once the bulk of the waste was out, we brought in the high-pressure jetter to work through the remaining obstruction inside the pipes. We also used descaling tools and rods to tackle the heavier scale that had accumulated along the pipe walls. This kind of build-up restricts flow even after the main blockage is cleared, so it’s worth dealing with properly rather than leaving it to cause problems again in six months.
We worked through the system methodically until the water was running through cleanly from one end to the other.
The result
Both chambers were cleared out, the scale was gone, and the drainage system was flowing freely again. We ran water through to demonstrate the flow to the customer directly — no backing up, no standing water, just a properly working drain.
They were relieved to see it sorted so quickly, and appreciated that we’d left everything clean and tidy rather than just packing up and heading off.
