At BDS Drainage, we were called out to a property in Woolwich where the toilet flush had stopped working properly. Water was constantly running into the toilet pan, which was frustrating for the client and wasting water every time the system failed to shut off.
What was wrong with the toilet?
When we arrived, the main issue was clear. The toilet wasn’t flushing as it should, and the internal mechanism wasn’t closing correctly after use. The client was worried the fault might not be repairable, especially as the flush trigger system was more complicated than a standard exposed cistern setup.
Our first job was to carefully inspect the system and work out exactly which part had failed.
Finding the faulty part
Using screwdrivers, we carefully opened up the flush mechanism and checked the working parts inside. We found the faulty section and initially tried to repair it, as this is often the most sensible first step when a part looks like it may be salvageable.
After testing it properly, it became clear the existing part wasn’t going to hold. A temporary fix would only have caused the same problem to return, so we explained this to the client and confirmed that a replacement part was needed.
Replacing the toilet flush mechanism

Once we had identified the correct part, we sourced a suitable replacement and fitted it into the existing system. Because the flush trigger setup was a little more involved than a basic toilet flusher, it needed to be lined up and tested carefully.
We made sure everything was secured properly before putting the system back together. The aim was simple: the toilet needed to flush cleanly, stop running water into the pan and work reliably for everyday use.
Making sure the job was done right
After the new part was fitted, we tested the toilet several times. The flush worked properly, the water stopped when it should, and there was no constant flow into the toilet bowl.
We also showed the client the new system flushing, so they could see for themselves that the fault had been fixed. This was important, as they had been worried we might not be able to get the job done due to the awkward flush setup.
The client was pleased that their toilet finally worked properly again, and the job was completed without needing to replace the full toilet.
