Who Needs a Gas Safety Certificate?
Not everyone needs a gas safety certificate. The HSE makes it clear who it’s required for:
Landlords, housing associations, local authorities, businesses in the hospitality industry, hostels, colleges and boarding schools are included.
These entities have a legal obligation to have a gas safety check every twelve months.
For the average homeowner, it’s not legally required. However, it is recommended. For one, you get peace of mind and your gas safety inspection can come with the annual maintenance that every heating system should get in order to preserve their functionality and efficiency.
Home insurance companies might also be interested in whether you can attest to the safety of your heating, as well. If you are a member of the required certificate holders, like a landlord, then failing to have an annual check is a criminal offence and can lead to a prosecution by the HSE.
