How BDS Drainage solved a leaking pipe fast

If you’ve lived in London for more than five minutes, you’ll know two things: parking is a nightmare and plumbing problems always seem to show up at the worst possible time. This particular job was no different. We were called out by a customer who had a leaking waste pipe tucked behind a bathroom cabinet — the sort of tight, awkward space that makes you wish you had elbows that folded in the opposite direction.

Still, drainage issues are what we’ve been dealing with day in, day out since 2009, so we knew exactly what we were walking into.

What the client needed

The customer’s main worry was that we’d have to turn the whole bathroom upside down to get to the problem. And honestly, that’s understandable. Nobody wants their tiles, cabinets or freshly-painted walls cracked open like a coconut. Her words were pretty clear: “I just don’t want a mess.”

The issue itself was twofold:

--> A blockage that was causing slow drainage

--> A leak coming from poorly-fitted pipework behind the vanity unit

So the job was simple on paper — unblock the pipe and stop the leak — but in reality, the access was tight, the pipes were wedged awkwardly against the wall, and water had already started to drip into the surrounding area. Left any longer, that could’ve caused expensive damage.

How we tackled the problem

Step 1: Clearing the space and getting access

The vanity unit had to come out first. Carefully, of course. We removed the cabinet and set it aside so nothing got scratched.

Once that was out of the way, we cut a neat access point in the wall behind it. Tight space? Absolutely. But manageable.

Step 2: Removing the faulty pipework

The old fittings were in bad shape — misaligned and leaking in several spots. We removed every piece that was causing the issue. If you’ve ever dealt with cheap connectors that aren’t seated properly, you’ll know the feeling of relief you get when you finally take them out.

Step 3: Sourcing new parts

This is the bit homeowners never see. We headed to the plumbers’ merchants to grab the right fittings. No guessing, no patch-job solutions. Just proper materials that would last.

Step 4: Installing the new pipework

Back at the property, we refitted everything securely, tested it several times, and checked the flow. No leaks, no drips, no slow drainage — just smooth running pipes exactly how they should’ve been in the first place.

Step 5: Putting the bathroom back together

Cabinet reinstalled. Tools cleared. Floor swept. Wall tidied.

Honestly, the clean-up can take almost as long as the repair, but it’s worth it. There’s nothing worse than leaving dust everywhere in a customer’s bathroom.

How we kept the client happy throughout

One thing we’ve learnt over the years is that customers want clarity. They want to know what’s happening, why it’s happening, and what it’ll look like afterwards — especially when a wall is being cut.

So we showed the customer photos and videos of the before-and-after once everything was connected, sealed, and flowing properly. It gave her peace of mind, and you could see the relief straight away.

Her feedback?

“That was done quicker than expected and you made a lot less mess than I expected, thank you so much.”

Comments like that never get old.

Why this job mattered

Aside from the tight access, this repair was important because water was being wasted and slowly making its way into the surrounding structure. A small leak can turn into a big problem — mould, damp, or even structural damage — if it’s left ignored. Stopping it early saved the customer a lot of money and stress.

Plus, when you mix a blockage with a leak, you’ve got a recipe for worsening conditions. Fixing both issues together gave the customer long-term peace of mind.
