How BDS Drainage Restored a Basement Bathroom in Islington

If you know Islington well, you’ll know that basements can be a bit unpredictable. Lovely when they’re dry and airy, not so lovely when something goes wrong. And if you’ve ever walked past a row of terraced houses there on a damp morning, you’ll know that trapped moisture lingers. Now imagine that mixed with sewage. That’s the situation our client found themselves in — a blocked toilet, sewage pooling on the bathroom floor, and absolutely no ventilation to help the smell escape. Not ideal.

They called BDS Drainage, and honestly, they did the right thing. When foul odours and blocked drains collide, you don’t want to “wait and see.” You want someone with the right kit, the right experience, and the stomach to handle it.

We’ve been unblocking drains across London and the South East since 2009, and while we’ve seen plenty, this job was definitely one that sticks in your mind.

Understanding the Problem: A Basement Bathroom in Trouble

The client was worried — genuinely worried — about two things:

1. The mess (we don’t blame them), and

2. The smell, especially with no windows or ventilation.

Basements already trap air, and when there’s standing sewage water on the floor… let’s just say it’s not the sort of aroma you get from a candle shop on Upper Street.

Our goal was straightforward:

Unblock the pipe, remove the waste water, deep-clean the area, and leave the bathroom looking and smelling fresh again.

But getting there required a bit of detective work.

Locating & Identifying the Blockage

Before you even think about unblocking a drain, you need to understand where the issue is hiding. So our team started by finding the manhole cover. Once we got access, we used our drainage inspection camera to trace the exact location of the blockage.

It turned out to be deeper in the pipework than the client expected — something you wouldn’t spot without the right tools.

That’s where years of hands-on drainage work really pay off. The camera doesn’t lie, and it saved everyone from guesswork.

How we resolved the blockage

The Unblocking Process: Petrol-Powered Precision

Once we knew where the problem was, we brought out the heavy hitter: our petrol-powered high-pressure water jet.

If you’ve never seen one of these in action, it’s genuinely impressive. It cuts through debris, wipes out built-up grime, and clears stubborn blockages far more effectively than any DIY method.

A few careful passes with the jet, and the blockage was gone.

We flushed the toilet several times just to be sure — no backing up, no slow draining, just clean, normal flow. Job done.

Well… not quite.

Sewage Removal: Pumping, Hoovering & Deep Cleaning

Clearing the drain was only half the battle. We still had a bathroom floor covered in sewage water, and a basement that smelled like… well, you can imagine.

Here’s where the specialist tools came in:

  • A waste-water pump to remove the bulk of the pooled water
  • A Vax hoover to extract residue and smaller puddles
  • Bleach, scrubbers, warm water, and a fair amount of elbow grease

We hoovered, scrubbed, hoovered again, watered down the surfaces, then repeated the process until the floor genuinely looked as good as new.

And yes — we finished with a generous dose of air freshener to help neutralise any leftover smell. With no ventilation, this step genuinely mattered.

By the end of it, the room didn’t just look clean. It felt clean.

Client Satisfaction

This client stayed involved throughout the process, popping down to check progress whenever they could (braver than most!). They saw the dirty, chaotic starting point and then saw the transformation at the end.

"Very happy with the thorough job that you did."

You can’t ask for better than that.
